Get your free estimateLinear Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If your Linear gate has started grinding, sagging, or binding mid-swing, the hinges and rollers are usually the culprits. We stock Linear-compatible hinge and roller kits on our trucks and typically install them for $285 – $465 per gate leaf in Los Angeles, parts and labor included, with most jobs done in a single visit. You’ll hear it before you see it: a low groan when the gate moves, a visible drop on the latch side, or wheel marks worn into the driveway concrete.

A hinge or roller doesn’t usually fail all at once. It wears down over months, and most owners in Los Angeles only notice once the gate starts dragging or the automatic opener starts struggling against the added resistance. By then, the motor has been compensating for a while, which shortens its life too. Catching the mechanical wear early keeps a $300 hinge job from becoming a $2,000 full operator replacement.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear has manufactured swing gate operators and hardware across several series lines since the 1990s, and the hinge and roller requirements vary more than you’d expect. The most common systems we service in Los Angeles are Linear’s SwingArm, Smart Swing (APeX and its successors), and the OSCO-branded swing gate lines that Linear absorbed years ago. The gate leaf itself – the moving panel, not the operator – is where the hinges and rollers live, and that hardware is often a mix of Linear-specified parts and installer-supplied steel that may or may not match the original spec.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see constantly: Linear operators don’t dictate the hinge spec, the gate fabricator does. If the original gate was built by a company that used 6-inch barrel hinges on a 14-foot steel leaf, you can’t swap in a lighter 4-inch hinge just because it bolts up. The hinge pin diameter, leaf thickness, and weld pattern all need to match what the gate weighs and how it’s loaded. For rollers, measure the wheel diameter, the groove profile (V-groove vs. flat), and the bearing inner diameter before ordering anything. We carry both OEM Linear-branded hinge and roller sets and quality aftermarket equivalents from Vulcan and HardwareSource that we’ve installed on dozens of Linear gates across Los Angeles without issue. For most residential gates, the aftermarket options match or beat OEM durability at around 60 – 70% of the price, and we’ll tell you upfront which one makes sense for your specific gate.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Linear Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- Visible sag on the latch side. The gate leaf drops an inch or more at the free end, leaving the latch misaligned with the receiver. That sag means the hinge pins or bushings have worn oval and the roller is now carrying weight it was never designed to hold.
- Grinding or squealing during operation. A healthy roller rolls quietly. Metal-on-metal grinding usually means the bearing inside the wheel has disintegrated and the wheel is now skidding instead of rolling, which gouges the track or driveway surface.
- Flat spots on the roller wheel. In Los Angeles heat, polymer roller wheels can develop flat spots when a gate sits stationary for weeks in the same position and gets hot. Once a flat spot forms, the gate lurches every time that spot hits the ground.
- Operator straining or tripping the safety reverse. Linear operators sense resistance, and worn hinges dramatically increase drag. If your opener has started reversing mid-cycle or throwing fault codes it never threw before, the mechanical hardware is usually the reason.
- Side-to-side movement in the open gate. Grab the open leaf and try to rock it laterally. Movement of more than half an inch at the far end means the hinge tube or pin is shot, or the roller support bracket is failing.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical single-leaf residential Linear swing gate in Los Angeles, expect $285 – $465 per leaf for hinge and roller replacement, including parts and labor. That range covers sourcing the correct Linear-compatible hinge kit, replacing worn hinge pins and bushings, swapping in a new matched roller assembly, re-leveling the gate leaf, and adjusting the operator’s force settings so everything runs cleanly. Heavier commercial gates, welded-in hinge replacements, or gates that require custom-machined pins run higher, and we’ll quote that before any cutting or welding starts.
The price you’re quoted is the price you’ll pay – written down, before a single bolt is turned. That’s the Kingswell Way, and it’s not a sales line. Every hinge and roller replacement we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the hardware we installed fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No pro-rating, no argument, no re-inspection fee.

Swapping a worn roller wheel or replacing bushings on a gate that’s already lifted and blocked safely is within reach for a capable homeowner with a floor jack and the right parts. What’s not safe is working on a heavy steel gate that’s still on its hinges with gravity actively trying to fold it onto you. A 14-foot steel leaf weighs 400 to 700 pounds, and when the hinge bushings are shot, that weight can shift unpredictably. We’ve been called out too many times in Los Angeles to fix gates that came down mid-repair, sometimes with injured homeowners in the story.
Our honest advice: if the gate is light (under 200 pounds), the hinge pins are intact, and you’re just swapping a bolt-on V-groove roller, do it yourself with the power to the operator fully disconnected. If it’s a welded-in hinge replacement, a sagging heavy leaf, or anything involving the hinge barrels themselves, call us at (213) 322-0062. We’ll give you a straight number over the phone before we schedule the truck.
FAQs
In coastal-adjacent neighborhoods like Playa del Rey and Marina del Rey, expect 5 – 7 years from quality roller bearings before the salt air and marine layer start corroding exposed steel. Inland, where the heat and dust dominate (think the Valley or the Inland Corridor cities), polymer roller wheels and non-sealed bearings often need replacement at the 3 – 5 year mark. Sealed-bearing V-groove rollers consistently outlast unsealed by 2 to 3 years in our Los Angeles service area, and they’re what we recommend for most residential gates. If your gate gets heavy daily use (20+ cycles a day), plan on hinge bushing replacement around year 4 regardless of location. Call us at (213) 322-0062 and we’ll help you figure out what condition your hardware is in before recommending anything.
Sometimes, but we’re candid about when it’s worth it and when it’s not. If the hinge pin itself is worn and the barrels are still round, we can press in oversized pins and ream the barrels to match – that’s a $75 – $150 repair that buys you real time. If the barrels have gone oval or the hinge tube has cracked at the weld, repairing is false economy: the geometry is already compromised and it will fail again, usually in a matter of months. We’d rather tell you that upfront than take your money twice. Give us a call at (213) 322-0062 and describe what you’re seeing; we’ll give you an honest assessment over the phone.
For most single-leaf residential gates, we’re done in 90 minutes to 2.5 hours from arrival to final force-setting adjustment. The work includes lifting and blocking the gate safely, freeing the old hinge hardware (heat and penetrating oil where necessary), welding in or bolting up the replacement, setting the new roller, re-leveling, and running the gate through several full cycles to confirm the Linear operator isn’t fighting anything. Dual-leaf or rusted-weld jobs run longer, and we’ll tell you before we start. Call (213) 322-0062 for a same-day or next-day arrival window.
Yes. Our Los Angeles trucks carry the most common Linear-compatible roller diameters (4-inch and 6-inch V-groove and flat profile), sealed-bearing wheel assemblies, hinge pin stock in 3/4-inch and 1-inch diameters, and weld-on barrel replacement kits. We also keep aftermarket equivalents for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates on board, since half of Los Angeles gates share hardware DNA across brands. If your gate needs a custom-machined pin or oversized bushing, we’ll have it ready same-day from our local machine shop partner. Call (213) 322-0062 and Dean will tell you what’s on the shelf that fits your model.
