Elite Access Control Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Elite access control installation in Los Angeles typically runs $650 to $1,800 for a complete keypad, card reader, or telephone entry system mounted and wired to your existing Elite gate operator. We stock Elite-compatible controllers, keypads, and card readers on our trucks, and in most Los Angeles neighborhoods we can complete a straightforward access control swap the same day we diagnose it. You usually find out the access control has failed the hard way: the gate stops opening from the keypad, the card reader blinks but won’t release the latch, or a tenant calls saying the remote works but the call box doesn’t. This page gives you the exact information I’d give you over the phone: what fails, what it costs to fix, and what we install so you don’t have to think about it again for years.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite builds access control panels under the SL and Mircom names as well as the Elite brand itself, and they don’t all talk to your gate operator the same way. The most common units we see on Los Angeles driveways and apartment entries are the Elite SL-3000 and the Elite Mircom TX3 series for multi-tenant call boxes, plus older Elite S Series keypads on single-family swing gates. A key compatibility gotcha: the SL-3000 runs on a 12-volt control loop, while some older Elite panels still carry 24-volt wiring, so matching the panel voltage to your operator’s auxiliary output is the difference between a working install and a fried board.

If you’re not sure which unit you have, open the front cover and look for a silver rating label on the inside face of the enclosure. It will carry a model number and a date code in the format MM/YY. For OEM versus aftermarket: we install genuine Elite parts when they’re available for your model, but for discontinued S Series readers we carry quality aftermarket replacements that fit the same cutout and wire to the same terminals, and we’ll tell you plainly which one makes sense for your job before we order anything. Most Elite wall-mount keypads mount to a standard single-gang box, so the physical swap is faster than the wiring re-check.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad beeps but gate doesn’t move. The keypad itself is talking, but the relay on the control board isn’t closing, or the wiring between the keypad and the operator has gone open. We see this most on older Elite panels in coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods if you’re close to the marine layer ground moisture, the relay contacts inside the panel corrode and stop passing voltage.
  • Card reader flashes red instead of green. A red flash on an Elite reader usually means the reader lost its connection to the controller. It could be a loose data wire or a failed reader module. In Los Angeles sun, the reader housings also crack after six or seven years and let irrigation overspray into the electronics.
  • Gate opens from inside but not from the keypad. When the operator’s own push-button works but the Elite access control doesn’t, the fault is almost never the gate motor. It’s the panel relay, the wiring run under the driveway, or a shorted keypad membrane.
  • Telephone entry box rings busy or dead air. Elite telephone entry units (mostly the Mircom TX3 line) hard-reset themselves during power flickers, and Los Angeles has SCE Edison work in enough neighborhoods now that we reset and reprogram TX3s regularly. If it rings dead air, the panel’s modem board has reached the end of its life.
  • Tenant or family codes won’t stay programmed. When an Elite panel loses its saved codes within days of programming, the memory chip on the main board is failing. Some can be reflashed, but most Los Angeles owners are better off replacing the board once and having the new one programmed clean.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we actually charge to install Elite access control in Los Angeles, parts and labor together:

  • Standalone Elite keypad replacement: $340 to $550 installed. The part is under $200 wholesale; the rest is wiring check, mounting, programming, and verifying the operator responds correctly.
  • Elite SL-3000 controller with keypad and two card readers: $900 to $1,400 installed. This is the common single-family and small-commercial setup. The controller mounts in a weatherproof enclosure; we wire it to your operator’s open/close terminals and program the card stack on site.
  • Elite/Mircom TX3 telephone entry system for multi-unit gates: $1,200 to $1,800 installed, depending on the number of tenant lines and whether the old panel’s enclosure can be reused. Programming the tenant directory and phone routing is included.
  • Access control only, operator already working: $300 to $700 to add a keypad or single card reader to an existing Elite or compatible gate operator.

The price covers the new part, any wiring repairs inside the gate area, mounting hardware, full programming, and a test cycle with you watching. It also includes our written Kingswell Guarantee: the price you approve before we start is the price you pay, and the installation is covered for 365 days. If anything we installed fails in that window, we return and correct it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. Dean Prescott, our owner and lead technician, gives pricing over the phone that doesn’t change when the truck pulls away.

DIY or Call Us?

An Elite access control installation is low-voltage work, which makes the wiring side less dangerous than a bad garage door spring, honest truth, but a wrong connection to your gate operator’s control board can burn out a $200 to $600 board in half a second. What you can safely do yourself: check that the keypad gets power, tighten any visibly loose wire nuts behind the unit, and write down the exact model and any error codes before you call. What I would not do yourself: wire a new controller into an Elite operator you still need working tomorrow morning.

Elite panels have different relay configurations across model years, and the wiring diagram online is frequently for a different revision than the one on your wall. A misread terminal kills the operator board and turns a $450 keypad job into a $1,500 full operator replacement. We arrive with the right harness, the right relay module, and the right programming software already loaded. Call (213) 322-0062 and tell me what the gate is doing, or not doing, and I’ll give you a real number before I even pull out of the driveway.
