We stock and install LiftMaster-compatible welded gate frames, hinge reinforcements, and custom fabrication for Los Angeles properties every week. A typical LiftMaster gate welding repair runs $240 – $680 installed, and most jobs are finished in a single visit because our trucks carry the common brackets, hinges, and steel stock we need on board. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the gate starts dragging on one corner, the LiftMaster operator strains and shuts down mid-cycle, or a hinge tears loose from the post after years of wind off the 405 corridor.

If you’re hearing a metallic groan when the gate moves, or you can see daylight between a hinge plate and the post it used to be welded to, that’s a fabrication failure. The LiftMaster operator itself is usually fine. The steel around it is what gave up.
Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To
We do welding and fabrication for virtually every LiftMaster swing and slide gate operator in the field: the LA400, LA412, LA500, SL3000, and the heavier CSL24V and CSW200 series on commercial lots. The compatibility question isn’t really about the operator model. It’s about the gate frame it’s pushing. A Light Commercial LiftMaster pushing a 600-pound ornamental steel gate puts very different stress on the hinge welds than a residential LA400 on a 14-foot tube gate. The part numbers we track are for the fabricated pieces, not the operator itself: hinge barrels, post plates, frame corner gussets, rack mounts for slide gates, and operator mounting pedestals.
Here’s the gotcha most people don’t know until a tech tells them: LiftMaster’s slide-gate rack mounts are engineered for specific rail heights. If a previous installer welded the rack 3/8″ low to clear a drainage swale, the drive sprocket chews through the rack teeth in about two years. We measure the rail-to-sprocket clearance before we ever strike an arc, because re-welding the same misaligned rack just guarantees another failure. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for structural steel like hinge plates and gussets, a properly fabricated replacement often outlasts the original. For anything that meshes with LiftMaster’s drive sprocket or chain, stick with LiftMaster-spec parts. The tooth profile matters.

Signs Your LiftMaster Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Gate drags or scrapes on the ground at the latch side. The hinge welds on the post are stretching. The gate sags a quarter inch, then a half inch, and the operator’s overload sensor trips because it’s working harder than it should.
- You can see rust streaks below a hinge or bracket. That’s fretting corrosion, which means the weld has microscopic cracks and moisture is working through them. In Los Angeles’s coastal air, especially west of the 405, salt accelerates this. A surface rust spot is cosmetic; rust streaks below a weld mean the joint is separating internally.
- The LiftMaster operator shuts down mid-cycle and blinks an error code. Usually an obstruction or overload fault. The machine is telling you the gate got too heavy to move, which often traces back to a sagging frame or a binding hinge.
- A hinge pin is riding up out of the barrel. The barrel itself has worn or cracked from side loading, and the pin no longer seats. Weld-build the barrel or replace it. Greasing it just hides the wear for a week or two.
- The gate post flexes visibly when the gate reverses direction. The post was either undersized for the gate or the root of the weld has cracked. We sleeve and re-weld the post base on most repair calls like this. It’s common with older Los Angeles homes where a 2-inch post is holding a gate that should have been on a 4-inch post.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most LiftMaster welding and fabrication repairs in Los Angeles fall between $240 and $680 installed. A simple hinge re-weld or crack repair at a single point runs $240 – $340. Replacing a hinge set with new plates, barrels, and pins typically lands at $350 – $520. Larger fabrication jobs, like gusseting a sagging frame, sleeving a post, or re-aligning and re-welding a slide-gate rack, run $480 – $680. If the job requires cutting out damaged steel and fabricating a new section from stock, the price reflects the additional steel and shop time.
| Repair Scope | Typical Los Angeles Price Range |
|---|---|
| Single hinge crack repair / re-weld | $240 – $340 |
| Hinge set replacement with new plates & pins | $350 – $520 |
| Frame gusset / sag correction | $400 – $580 |
| Post sleeve & re-weld | $450 – $650 |
| Slide-gate rack re-alignment & welding | $480 – $680 |
Every one of these jobs gets a written price before we touch anything. The quote includes steel, welding consumables, grinding, paint or rust treatment on the finished surface, and labor. If we open up the gate and find the operator itself is damaged, we stop and show you before adding anything to the ticket. The Kingswell Guarantee puts it in writing, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise means if that weld fails inside a year, we return and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things without putting yourself at risk: look for visible crack lines around hinges and brackets, note whether the gate scrapes at the latch side, and listen for changes in how the LiftMaster motor sounds. That helps us quote over the phone. What you shouldn’t attempt is the welding itself. A gate under tension, especially a 300-to-600-pound steel one, stores energy. Cutting a cracked hinge off a loaded gate can let the whole assembly drop or swing. And a weld that looks solid but lacks proper penetration will fail again, usually at the worst possible moment. We’re on the road across Los Angeles every day. Dean Prescott and the techs who work with him have seen enough bad DIY gate welds to know what holds and what just looks like it holds. Call (213) 322-0062 and tell us what the gate is doing, or not doing, and we’ll give you a real number before we even pull out of the driveway.
FAQs
A properly welded, correctly sized hinge set on a Los Angeles gate typically lasts 12 to 20 years. Coastal properties within a few miles of the Pacific may see shorter life, around 8 to 12 years, because of salt air. Homes inland, like in the Valley or Pasadena, often go the full two decades.
We can re-weld an existing hinge if the crack is fresh and the steel around it is still sound. If the hinge barrel is worn, the pin is loose, or the plate has stretched bolt holes, replacement is cheaper in the long run than re-welding a part that’s already at the end of its service life. We’ll show you the difference before we start. Call (213) 322-0062 for a straight answer and a free estimate.
Most single-point welding repairs on a LiftMaster gate take 2 to 3 hours on site, including grinding, welding, and rust-protectant painting. Jobs that require new hinge fabrication or post sleeving can run 4 to 6 hours. We give you an arrival window before we come out, and the work is done the same day in most cases.
We stock the common LiftMaster-compatible hinge plates, barrels, pins, gussets, and steel stock on our Los Angeles truck, so most repairs don’t require a second visit. For specialty pieces, we fabricate in-house rather than waiting on a supplier. We also stock parts for Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing gate operators, so if your system has a mix of brands, we can usually handle it in one trip.
